About Africa

The second-largest, the second-most populated, and the oldest inhabited continent on Earth, Africa is most well known for its beautiful landscapes, its diverse ethnic groups and for being home to some of the most majestic and fascinating animals on the planet. 54 different countries make up the continent of Africa (more than any other continent in the world), containing over 3,000 tribes and cultures. There are also thought to be more than 1,500 different languages spoken in Africa – making the diversity of cultural traditions, festivals, and lifestyles of the countries here so unique and special.

The Big Five

One big draw which continually brings people to Africa is the incredible wildlife the continent is home to. The ‘Big Five’ game animals, as they are often referred to – lions, leopards, elephants, African buffalo and often rhinoceroses are what come to mind when people think of Africa. Going on a safari is a big bucket-list item for many, and alongside the big five, there are so many different animals to spot. Africa is a budding photographer’s dream, from giraffes, gazelles, and lions in the Serengeti, to the chimpanzees, the gorillas, and the reptiles of the jungle. Africa is home to over 1,100 different species of mammals and over 2,600 species of birds. The continent holds its weight when it comes to animals. The largest animal on the continent is the African Elephant, and it’s also the largest land animal in the world.

African Heritage

Africa is also home to some of the most important historical sites in the entire world. The continent has 98 sights on the World Heritage List, including Serengeti National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, Victoria Falls, the Great Lakes of Kenya, the Okavango Delta and many more. Egypt alone has 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the ancient pyramids of Giza, which are truly a sight to behold. The Pyramids of Giza are also one of the Seven Wonders of the World and hold so much history. In fact, it is the only wonder of the ancient world that has survived to the present day. With an abundance of different landscapes, wildlife, rich cultures and awe-inspiring historical sights, it’s no wonder that Africa has some of the most visited countries on the planet.
